Democratic Backsliding: Politic, Society and Law - Workshop
Organizers: Prof. Eyal Benvenisti, Prof. Erica Weiss, Prof. Hannah Lerner, Prof. Issachar Rosen-Zvi
Democratic backsliding, characterized by a gradual or rapid decline in the quality and strength of democratic values and the institutions meant to nurture and preserve them, currently poses a major challenge for many countries worldwide. In this workshop we will conduct an in-depth analysis of this phenomenon, aiming to identify common global trends as well as unique characteristics specific to each country. We will explore the underlying factors driving democratic backsliding, its impacts on society, the economy, politics, and law, and potential responses to it. Each week, the workshop will host a leading researcher from various disciplines, including political science, political philosophy, economics, sociology, and law, who will discuss different aspects of democratic backsliding to enhance our understanding of this critical issue.
The workshop is jointly sponsored by the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics and the Center for Applied Research on Risks to Democracy.
